The bridge, commissioned by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is located in Wardha, which is synonymous with the ‘Sevagram Ashram’ of Mahatma Gandhi, from where he led the nation for 12 years until independence. This 315m long bridge crossing over the Wardha river, while entering the Wardha district, is intended to serve as a welcome gate to this historic place that has witnessed the legacy of great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave. Commitment to ‘khadi’ cloth and hand spinning were essential elements of Gandhiji’s philosophy. The form of this bridge is representative of the symbolic spinning wheel or ‘Charkha’, which became an emblem of the revolutionary ‘Swadeshi’ movement during India’s freedom struggle.
