The Humphrey Bridge is being rated as the longest bridge in the A&N Islands and the lifeline of the people of North & Middle Andaman. The total length of the bridge (including the approach road) is 1450m while the width of the bridge is 14.8 metres having a 1.5m (total 3m) pedestrian footpath on both sides. The height of the bridge has been designed in such a way to enable the smaller vessel to pass through underneath the bridge and is 22m from the high tide level. Andaman is famous for four sea turtles, leatherback, hawksbill, green and olive ridley, that occur along the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. All of these have been declared endangered by the IUCN. The leatherback sea turtle is the largest of all living turtles and is the fourth-heaviest modern reptile. Therefore, the concept for the bridge is Leatherback Turtle.
Longest Bridge in Andaman and Nicobar
The construction work of the Humphrey Strait Creek Bridge, being rated as the longest bridge in A&N Islands and lifeline of the people of North & Middle Andaman, is going on in full swing. The Bridge is coming up between Gandhi Ghat Jetty & Uttara Jetty near Kadamtala, Middle Andaman. The National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) is the executing agency and the project, which comes under National Highway-4, is expected to be completed ahead of the scheduled target date of April 2020, said its General Manager, NHIDCL, Shri Dilbagh Singh Dhanda while speaking to ‘The Daily Telegrams’ here.Giving further details of the ongoing project, the GM stated that the total length of the bridge (including approach road) is 1450m while the width of the bridge is 14.8metre having 1.5m (total 3m) pedestrian footpath at both sides. The height of the bridge has been designed in such way to enable the smaller vessel to pass through underneath the bridge, and is 22m from the high tide level. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highway has sanctioned an amount of Rs. 277.17 crores for this project, the work for which started in the month of April 2017. M/s MBZ-RDS (JV) is the L1 bidder for the project.The bridge coming up at Humphrey Strait will not only fulfil the long pending demand of the people of North & Middle Andaman but also ease the connectivity between South Andaman & Middle & North Andaman.
