MGIRI Khadi Building

The MGIRI Khadi, Chemical and Bioprocessing Building provides laboratory, workshop, and teaching spaces for the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialization's research programmes in traditional textile processing and biotechnology. The building bridges the material cultures of hand-spinning and modern laboratory science — a programmatic tension that informed the architectural resolution.

The building is organised as two wings — one for textile workshops, one for chemical and bioprocessing laboratories — connected by a central double-height atrium that serves as the shared heart of both programmes. The atrium is day-lit through a continuous north-facing roof lantern, providing the even, shadow-free light required for textile colour work. DesignFakt delivered complete architectural and engineering design for MGIRI.
